Have you ever wanted to shave your head in solidarity with your loved ones who have suffered from cancer in their lives? I shaved my head at the end of my junior year—not completely bald, but I did have less than an inch all around which made it soft and fuzzy—and found it to be quite a liberating experience. Plus, when I rubbed my head up against the wall, it made a nice crunchy sound—like walking through snow. So if you’ve never done it and want to shave your head “all the way,” I say go for it. But if not, you can still express solidarity in other ways.
On October 22, those of us who aren’t brave enough to shave our heads—or who wish to express solidarity but couldn’t handle being bald for long—can join in the “Be Bold, Be Bald” movement. The goal of the day is to raise both awareness and funds to fight cancer as well as stand in support of those who battle the disease every day—by wearing a cap to make you appear to bald.
Participants first register here for just $15. Then, you can select the cancer charity of your choice to donate your proceeds to—which is perfect for people who want to give to a certain organization or to avoid research groups that test on animals. In fact, nonprofit cancer charities can contact the Be Bold, Be Bald campaign and ask to be included if they wish. As of today, the organizations to choose from include The Lance Armstrong Foundation, The Jimmy Fund, Prostate Cancer Foundation, The International Myeloma Foundation, and the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. To request to be listed as a participating organization, fill out this form.
The feet itself covers your participation kit, which includes your cap, a t-shirt, a button, a guide, and other materials. Then, you get to set up your own webpage to get people to sponsor you and help you meet your fundraising goal for the campaign.
To get sponsorship, all you have to do is promise to wear your bald cap all day on October 22—and then do so on that date. For those of us who have a hard time raising money, there are dozens of tips and suggestions on the website to help us out. You can also simply go to the site and donate if you prefer.
